Gopal (caste)
Gopal or Gouda is an Indian caste, from Odisha State in East India. Their traditional occupations include dairy farming, cattle herding, cultivation and carrying palanquins of deities. They also worked as Paikas (soldiers) under the kings. Gopal is the name of the milkmen or herdsmen caste in Odisha, which is known by other names (such as Ahir, Yadav, Goala etc.) in various parts of India. According to 1931 census of India, they are second largest caste by numbers and comprise around 9% of Odisha's population. Etymology The word Gopal derived from vedic "Gopala", which "''Go''" refers to cow and "''Pala''" refers to protector or herder. Gopal Gurung () (7 December 1939 – 10 June 2016) was a politician, author, journalist, teacher and vocal advocate of the human rights for the indigenous peoples, indigenous people of Nepal. Gurung was the editor-in-chief of ''New Light'' and ''Thunderbolt'' weekly newspapers for many years. Gopal Krishna Gokhale ( International Phonetic Alphabet, [ˈɡoːpaːl ˈkrɪʂɳə ˈɡoːkʰleː] 9 May 1866 – 19 February 1915) was an Indian political leader and a social reformer during the Indian independence movement, and political mentor of India, Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi. Gopal Ghose (5 December 1913 – 30 July 1980) was an Indian painter from West Bengal. In 1943, he was one of the founders of the Calcutta Group, perhaps the first group of modernist painters in India. Life and career Ghose was born in Calcutta, West Bengal on 5 December 1913. After obtaining a diploma in painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Jaipur in 1935, he trained in sculpture at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Chennai in 1938, where he studied under Debi Prasad Roy Choudhuri. Initially influenced by the Bengal School, Ghose was drawn to the pictorial vocabulary developed by European Expressionists and Cubists to depict nature. Rao Bahadur Gopal Hari Deshmukh () also known as Lokhitwadi (18 February 1823 – 9 October 1892) was an Indian activist, thinker, social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. Gopal Nilkanth Dandekar aka Appa Dandekar (8 July 1916 – 1 June 1998) was a Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. Dandekar was born in Paratwada in Amravati district. He grew up in Vidarbha but ran away from his home in Nagpur at age thirteen in response to Mahatma Gandhi's call to young people for joining his movement for India's attainment of freedom from the British Raj.
